I frequently get questions about the vinyl designs.
Where can I get that clear stuff?
You can usually purchase it by the yard at most fabric stores. I have found it at Walmart and Handcock fabrics. One yard will go a long way and it is very inexpensive.
How thick is it?
There are several different weights, from very thin to very thick. You can feel the difference in your fingers. I recommend using a heavier weight vinyl vs the thinner weight. I have not had any problems with tearing at all using this heavier weight vinyl. I can not personally comment on the results of using the thinner stuff, but I have heard people say they had problems with it tearing. I have no experience with the thin kind at all.
Can I wash it?
Yes, you can wash and dry it on a low heat setting.
I have washed finished projects and dried them on a low heat setting and they came out of the dryer fine. I used to turn T-shirts inside out to lessen the chance of the vinyl coming in contact with the hot dryer but recently I have done some bar and kitchen towels and put them in the dryer so I do not bother to turn the shirts inside out anymore BUT it may prolong the life of the vinyl if you are able to turn your project inside out. I usually wash t-shirts before doing any type embroidry, just to minimize any puckers caused by the shirt shrinking in the wash/dryer. At last report, my nephew's shirt
had been washed about 2 dozen times. :)
Does it steam up inside?
I have not had any items come out of the dryer fogged or steamed up. It looks just as it did before it was washed and dried.
I hope this has been helpful and has answered some of your questions about using clear vinyl with your projects. Enjoy stitching, and have fun with your projects!
